THE CULTURE- SHOCKED MAASAI

A Maasai Moran accepts Islam in the hands of iEra daee.

The Maasai are among the few African tribes that have held on to their traditional way of life, post civilisation.

They are a nomadic people and are mostly found in Eastern Africa. You can easily identify them in a crowd, especially the men; as they proudly wear their red shawls, beads and sandals in a sea of trousers, sneakers and T-shirts! No one would even be surprised to see them walking beside their livestock in the busy modern towns of Africa!

The intrigues of modernisation; the cars, skyscrapers, and business suits don’t amuse them, and they walk past all of that without care!
Not until one Maasai met iERA daees wearing the Muslim thobe. 😳

Our iERA daees usually dress casually during the week, but on Fridays, they like to switch it up and put on the Kanzu (Swahili for the Muslim thobe).

One Friday after the Jumuah prayers, the daees went around the village to greet and remind the new Muslims about attending the dawah classes. Along the way, a Masaai Moran saw them and approached them!

A Moran is a young Maasai male who is mainly tasked with ensuring the clan’s security and herding its livestock.

This Moran was shocked and curious about the daees’ outfits. He wanted to know what kind of a dress that was, and why they had worn it since it looked different from everyone elses!

This sparked a conversation and a series of questions about Islam, that eventually led to the young Moran accepting Islam. Allahu Akbar!
